Why I Ordered the Same Latex Dress Twice in Different Colours

I don’t usually buy the same thing twice. I’m the person who owns one black dress, wears it until it needs replacing, then looks for something different. Repetition has always felt a little wasteful.

Then, about three months ago, I ordered the same latex dress in two colours. The cut, length and neckline were identical. I have not regretted it for a second.

The first one was black

I bought the black dress first. It was a simple fitted latex midi dress in 1.0 mm latex, with a back zip. I had been looking at it for weeks but kept putting it off because I already owned a black dress.

Then I wore it.

The fit was better than I expected. Latex does not simply hang from the body; when the measurements and pattern are right, it sits close and follows the shape. The waist landed where my actual waist was, rather than where the dress decided it should be. I wore it to dinner, then a birthday, then a gig.

Each time I came home thinking the same thing: I would wear this even more if it came in another colour.

The second one was not black

About six weeks later, I ordered the same dress in deep burgundy. It was not a bright red or a dark wine shade, but somewhere comfortably between the two.

That was when I understood the point.

The black dress is what I wear when I want the outfit to feel polished. The burgundy one is what I wear when I want the outfit to have more personality without changing the silhouette.

They have the same cut, fit and construction, but the colour changes the whole mood. The black feels understated and easy to style. The burgundy becomes the detail that makes the outfit feel deliberate.

Why buying the same style twice can make sense

I used to think buying two of the same style was lazy. Now I see it differently.

When you find a latex garment that fits properly, you learn the details that matter: whether the waist sits comfortably, whether the length works with your shoes, whether the zip closes without a struggle and whether you can move naturally once the garment is dressed.

Finding a second style that works equally well can take time. Once you know that a particular cut suits your body, changing the colour is a much smaller decision than starting the fit search again from scratch.

Latex sizing and patterning can vary between brands and styles, so use the measurements for the exact garment rather than relying only on a familiar size label. A good fit should be close and supportive without causing pain, numbness or restricted breathing.

What I learned about colour in latex

Black

Black is the easiest starting point because it works with so many other colours and textures. It can be styled with a blazer, boots, heels, knitwear or a coat, and the polished surface becomes more or less noticeable depending on the lighting.

Burgundy and deep red

Burgundy is still versatile, but it adds warmth and character. With a black coat, the collar or hem can provide a small flash of colour. With a simple outfit, the dress itself becomes the focal point without needing extra accessories.

Brighter and paler colours

Bright colours can look striking under studio and event lighting, while pale or white latex creates a very different, cleaner effect. They may also need more careful handling because marks and discolouration can be easier to notice. The right choice depends on how you plan to wear and store the garment, not on one colour being universally better.

Would I do it again?

Yes. If I find another latex piece that fits this well, I would happily buy it in two colours again. Two feels like the right balance: one neutral shade for easy styling, and one with a little more life.

When you find a garment that fits properly and makes you feel good, buying the same cut in another colour is not wasteful. It is a way of getting more use from a design you already know works for you.
