Looking beyond Lisbon does not mean abandoning city life.

The city is smaller and more compact than Lisbon, while areas such as Foz do Douro and Nevogilde provide residential living close to the coast.

One reason international families look beyond Lisbon is simple: space.
A budget that buys an apartment in central Lisbon might buy a house with a garden and swimming pool elsewhere.
But square metres should not be the only consideration.
A larger home loses some of its appeal if the school run takes an hour each way or every family member needs a car.
Smart buyers therefore compare daily life rather than just properties.
How far is the school? Can you walk to restaurants? Is there a hospital nearby? How long does the airport take?
